Letter from the Editors
Hayley Saunders: Last fall when we decided to make this issue our inaugural home issue, we had no idea our homes would be so incredibly important to us right now, taking on the additional roles of workplace, workout studio and sanctuary. As it turns out, now is the perfect time to celebrate all things abode — and the talented architects, builders, designers and other professionals behind the North’s most remarkable residences — all season long.
Kate Nelson: When it comes to home, there’s no household name like Martha Stewart. We were able to snag an exclusive Q+A with the iconic tastemaker, in which she reveals how she does it all and the secret to the good life — not to mention sheds some light on that unlikely friendship with Snoop Dogg (we know you’re as curious as we are). (page 190) We also got to chat with famed Top Chef host — and our cover star — Padma Lakshmi for our feature story. The actress, author and activist got candid about everything from women’s rights to immigration reform to her new show that debuts on Hulu this summer. (page 96)
HS: As if that’s not inspiring enough, this issue is packed with plenty of at-home inspo, including peeks inside a rustic yet refined family home by Rehkamp Larson Architects, Hagstrom Builder and Martin Patrick 3 (page 160); architect Andrea Swan’s Scandinavian chic cabin on Lake Mille Lacs (page 184); and a stunning Lake Minnetonka cottage crafted by Streeter that took its inspiration from a beloved coral necklace (page 166). Plus we’ve got expert advice for finding your garden style (page 203), a look at the hottest woo-woo home trends (page 39), and the ultimate way to make your home truly feel your own: with a monogram (page 44).
KN: Like you, we’ve faced new challenges in recent months, including putting together this very magazine amidst the coronavirus outbreak. But through it all, we remain committed to our mission to entertain and inspire our readers with compelling original content. Now more than ever, we are so thankful you welcome Artful Living into your home to be a fixture on your coffee table, a new addition to the bookshelf or the latest read on your nightstand.
Happy reading,
Kate Nelson, Editor-in-Chief, and Hayley Saunders, Managing Editor + Associate Publisher
