Since 1893, Plato Woodwork has earned its reputation as one of America’s finest custom cabinetry manufacturers. The Pinske family has owned and actively managed its thriving company in the small Minnesota community of Plato for five generations. In a world where details make the masterpiece, the brand has proven to be the master of detail for any room in any home. We asked Marketing and Design Manager Kari Hiltner to share some expert insight on how to successfully craft a space with custom cabinetry.

What is the first step in elevating a space with custom cabinetry?

Cabinetry style and organization is very personal. I will always ask clients for items or photos that inspire them and bring them happiness. It could come from a piece of furniture, artwork or an entire Pinterest board full of kitchen images. There will always be a thread tying those together, which makes it a great place to start.

What trends are you seeing right now when it comes to custom cabinetry?

We have seen a dramatic increase in our frameless Inovae orders. The European influence has always been present, but the materials and fittings coming on the market are fantastic.

What kind of custom woodworking is most popular at Plato?

Because we serve a wide range of dealers across the country — from traditional kitchen and bath show rooms to design/build firms and architects — we really see everything. I will tell you that paint still reigns supreme in both traditional and contemporary designs.

Can you talk more about Plato’s updated traditional design, Inovae 2.O?

Inovae 2.O is an extension of our full-access frameless Inovae line. The line fulfills the market demand for manmade materials in cabinetry. Inovae 2.O is a laminated product that starts with a core and is layered with a decorative embossed paper to give the real touch of wood grain, linen and metal. Gloss finishes are then coated in UV lacquer.

Introducing manmade materials to our Inovae line means we can provide our customers with a product that contributes to cleaner spaces and healthier living. Antibacterial agents embedded into the decorative surfaces reduce the bacteria living on cabinet surfaces, offering another level of hygiene. Inovae 2.O currently consists of 38 colors, and 18 colors are available with the embedded antibacterial agents.

Out of Plato’s five cabinetry lines, which one is your favorite?

That is such a difficult question! It’s like picking your favorite child. The best part of my job is getting the opportunity to work with so many people, in so many styles and with so many materials. I’ve been completely consumed by our contemporary designs and finishes for the past few years that it would be hard to say it’s not my favorite. But when I have an opportunity to work on a traditional or transitional custom project, I find myself having so much fun with the details.

Do you have any advice for those in search of custom cabinetry?

I really believe you can purchase a good quality cabinet box from many places. It’s going to be the service provided from your cabinetry partner that will set them apart. Are they transparent with their timelines and abilities? Are they able to work with your budget, wants and needs? Those are the important questions to ask.
