In home design, much like fine art, careful canvas prep is the foundation to creating an exceptional final product. The luxurious living experts at Hendel Homes know the importance of finding the right balance of finishes and materials as the base for cohesive, elegant interiors. Thoughtfully blending a variety of elements can take any space from comfortable to truly lavish. Here, Hendel Homes Principal and Marketing Director Amy Hendel shares 4 go-to material combinations to achieve timeless luxury in any living space.
Brass, Exotic Quartzite and French Oak
We love mixing materials in client projects. It all has to do with the feel, finish, pattern and texture working together to make a room feel special. With all the beautifully made, natural options available, stone surfaces can be showstoppers in a room. We’ll couple something like an exotic quartzite countertop with a metal that has a sheen, then juxtapose them with a matte, warm wood. Together, this combination creates an approachable space with an inspired palette that conveys beauty and strength.
High-Gloss Paint, Nickel and Pewter
If a little drama is needed, we’ll combine mixed metals with a high-gloss wall and ceiling finish. Solid pewter countertops pair beautifully with a polished-nickel faucet or fixture. The drama comes from the luster of the walls that enclose the space, while the natural characteristics of the pewter and nickel complement the shine and texture. We’ll add wood floors to ground the space or style it with warm, upholstered elements to really make the application sing.
Iron, Natural Wood and Nubby Fabrics
If a more earthy feel is desired, we love to incorporate aged iron with natural-wood cabinetry or floors, and thick, textured fabrics or wool rugs. We advise our clients to always start designing a room by selecting one inspiring piece — a work of art, an accessory or a furniture item — and build upon that. The layers begin by complementing the focal piece, which creates an opportunity to play with unexpected textural elements that enhance the space without dominating the room.
Antique Brass, Marble and Stained White Oak
If casual elegance is the goal, anything antique brass will do the trick. This gorgeous material brings a sense of history to any space. When this metal is paired with natural, veined marble countertops and an unexpected pop of color, such as a deep green–stained French white oak, you immediately get that splendid feeling of sophistication. We like to introduce a unique detail to countertop edges as a thoughtful layer that can subtly enhance a space.
