There are thousands of wonderful old bathrooms in homes across the Twin Cities that have survived from the 1920s and 1930s. Think detailed tile, pedestal sinks and art deco lighting. These bathrooms also often have cramped spaces, clogged pipes, cracked floors, bathtubs without showers, and showers with windows. Such was the case with this project that had undergone a sad update sometime along the way. David Heide Design Studio’s goal was to reimagine this main bathroom by adding as many creature comforts as possible and leaving the scene looking like it had been untouched.

Some minor rearranging of plan provided more elbow room in the 45-square-foot bathroom. Switching out the cast-iron radiator and recessing a European-style one into the wall achieved more floor space. A new niche offers much-needed horizontal surface, and the bathtub was replaced with a commodious shower, complete with a seat. Plus the French-style shower doors don’t take up as much space as a single-swing.

All these features are brought together by the vintage-inspired tiles and marble detailing. Heated floor tile, glass towel bars, chrome fixtures and shower doorknobs that match the other hardware in the house belie the year. The finished product speaks to the home’s language in a modern and accommodating way, leaving it well-positioned for another 100 years.
