For a Minneapolis couple enjoying grandparenthood and entering the joyful chapter of retirement, a home is more than a structure — it’s the heart of the family. Vujovich Design Build’s challenge was to transform the homeowner’s well-worn 1939 Colonial into a practical haven for aging in place and a welcoming hub for gatherings of all sizes. The project vision was to create a space oriented for main-level living and seamless accessibility, where every design choice feels as if it had always been part of the home’s original story. The completed renovation, which will be open to tour during the final weekend of the 2025 Fall Artisan Home Tour, is a testament to spectacular design that looks forward and back.

October 17–19 | 12 to 6 p.m.
House R17, 3428 Edmund Boulevard, Minneapolis
The Colonial’s original compartmentalized layout was reimagined by adding a strategic U-shaped addition, which preserved yard space while accommodating a new primary suite, sunroom and mudroom. By removing a key wall, the Vujovich team created an open-concept living area where a grand kitchen island becomes the natural gathering point, flowing into the living room.
The transformed kitchen, which is truly the heart of this home, is layered with warmth and texture. Mid-tone, rift-cut white oak cabinetry is accented with reeded tambour and custom-colored fire-molded glass, creating rhythm and interest. The backsplash’s sculptural large-format tile nods to the clients’ love of circles in an organic way. A cleverly concealed scullery, painted in cheerful yellow and blue, contains the mess of large-scale entertaining. It features a second sink, ovens and whimsical details like a pass-through serving window to the porch and a secret clubhouse door for the grandchildren, which is hidden in the old stairwell.
The private primary suite offers a serene retreat, complete with a vaulted ceiling and a luxurious, low-maintenance bathroom featuring full quartz shower walls and a warm walnut vanity. The Vujovich team curated every detail to meet the couple’s needs, from the wide staircase to the sun-drenched, vaulted sunroom that serves as a flexible space for dining, games or reading. The finishes throughout mix traditional elements with the unexpected — durable terrazzo-inlay tile grounds the entryways while whimsical wallpapers and custom-painted vanities add joyful pops of color to reflect the homeowners’ personalities. Every aspect of the design works together to create a timeless, functional and deeply personal home built for a lifetime of memories.
