As the saying goes, everything old eventually becomes new again, and this is certainly true in the world of home design. Over the years, the Traditions Classic Home Furnishings team has seen many interior fads fade in and out of popularity. Now celebrating its 36th anniversary, Traditions is commemorating this milestone by sharing 4 favorite design trends from the firm’s early days that are back in vogue.

Floral Fabrics and Embellishments

Floral fabrics and embellishments were all the rage in 1980s interior design and served as a go-to way for homeowners to add personality to their living spaces. From grandiose floral-print explosions to delicate pastel patterns (think Laura Ashley), this trend exhausted nearly application. Garden-chic style has definitely made a comeback today. From upholstery and wall coverings to fixtures and throw pillows, floral embellishments are one of our favorite ways to create a unique look and add flair to client projects.

Jewel Tones

On the heels of the neutral-hued residences of the 1970s, bold jewel tones became prominent with the resurgence of color in home design. People embraced the rich, luxurious shades of amethyst, emerald, ruby and sapphire in everything from wall paint to furniture. History is repeating itself today, as we see the cool grays and chic neutrals fading from popularity once again. Bright greens and deep pinks are replacing the warm beige tones of interiors past, instantly adding an opulent, energetic feel to any abode.

Reclaimed Wood

While the popularity of reclaimed wood in interior design has surged in recent years, it became a mainstream trend in the 1980s — and for good reason. This versatile element is a favorite among designers and homeowners as a way to bring the outdoors in and add an organic, earthy warmth to a space. We love to use reclaimed wood when clients are looking for a natural, sustainable way to add unique character and a charming sense of history to their dwelling.

Vintage Rugs

Vintage rugs are a great addition to any space, offering a whole lot more than aesthetic appeal. In the 1980s, they were used to add texture and warmth to interiors. Rugs in bold hues and geometric patterns were often the focal point of a room. Today, we use vintage rugs as the keystone to many designs because of their unique ability to tie colors together and create a cohesive look. In a landscape of cyclical trends, this timeless staple is a nice reminder that some things never really go out of style.
