In 1987, Mike and Suzanne Schumann opened Traditions Classic Home Furnishings on the corner of Selby and Dale in St. Paul’s historic Ramsey Hill neighborhood, pioneering a new wave of business that sparked the revitalization of the area to evolve into a vibrant retail and dining destination. Today, the Schumanns are celebrating the 39th anniversary of their fine furnishings business, which has become a premier Twin Cities home funishings boutique offering shoppable, livable design.

“At its core, our mission has stayed the same since day one,” says Suzanne. “We’ve always loved being a thoughtful retailer in our community and helping customers create beautifully furnished homes that feel personal and timeless. While trends and technology have changed over the years, our commitment to quality, service and meaningful relationships has remained constant.”

Currently operating flagships in both Minneapolis and Naples, Florida, Traditions showcases a curated mix of furniture styles, upholstery, lighting, rugs and accessories, along with a suite of services led by expert designers. “One of the most significant areas of growth for Traditions over the years has been our design services offerings,” Suzanne explains. “Clients are in search of true personalized guidance and full-service support, and we’ve loved expanding that side of the business.”

Traditions provides access to many of the most respected furniture manufacturers in the industry, including Taylor King, Wesley Hall, Lee Industries and Made Goods, all of which are proudly manufactured in the United States. This type of access has given the classic home furnishings hub the opportunity to furnish the governor’s mansion in Tallahassee, help shape together Artisan and historic homes throughout the Twin Cities, and even design a luxury Florida superyacht.

The Schumanns take great pride in the investment Traditions has made both in helping shape their clients’ homes into beloved sanctuaries and impacting the greater community from the start. “In 1991, we moved our first storefront to Grand Avenue in St. Paul. It was truly amazing to see all of the new businesses like us contribute to the lively block everyone cherishes today.”

As for what’s in store for Traditions’ bright future, Suzanne is quick to exclaim, “A big focus for the future is nurturing the next generation of talented young women within our company and encouraging them to bring fresh creativity, new technology and innovative ideas to the business. We’re very excited about continuing to grow while staying true to who we are.”
