Looking for some much-needed design inspiration? Good news for you: The Sitting Room Boutique’s doors are open! In 2010, founder and design director Kate Regan made the decision to move The Sitting Room Studio to Excelsior and, as the design firm continued to grow, it quickly became apparent that more space was needed. So in 2015, she opened the boutique on historic Water Street.
“Downtown Excelsior has an authenticity to it with many independently owned businesses,” praises Regan. “It’s a unique and exciting retail community.”

Recently, Regan and her team made the decision to refresh the boutique with a stunning floor-to-ceiling renovation, allowing the space to shine a brighter light on the design services the studio offers and better spotlights the firm’s favorite vendors and partners. The Sitting Room Studio is very fortunate to have a portfolio of work that spans a diverse array of extraordinary homes, and the goal of the major renovation was to instill every corner of the space with that spirit while preserving the charm and historical details.
“One of the most impactful changes is the new flooring. It provides a neutral base for our furniture vignettes,” Regan explains. “It was a tough decision whether or not to cover up the amazing mosaic tile that’s original to the building, especially given that it has survived two building fires!”
Because of this, the team decided to make it a feature, and the mosaic floor is now highlighted behind the cash wrap at the front of the newly paneled wall. Another favorite design detail in the space is the custom wood paneling and beams. The former space felt lacking in the architectural details, and the incorporation of the new paneling and beams not only provides that added flair, but elevates the space as a whole.
With many vendors still experiencing shipping delays, The Sitting Room is purposefully purchasing products ahead of schedule to fulfill design requests and needs. Each season, the boutique pulls together a collection of items representing what is currently inspiring the team from travels, projects, and current trends in culture and fashion.
