Each time I step off the plane at Heathrow, I know I’ll be leaving pieces of my heart in London. Across the pond, the historic metropolis beckons with its signature gloomy weather, world-class museums, abundant hospitality and mouthwatering fare. When my husband and I were planning our trip to England’s capital, the Westin London City offered an unmatched location and amenities we could not pass up. Set on the River Thames, just steps from St Paul’s Cathedral and the Tate Modern museum with easy access to the London Underground, we quickly found ourselves feeling at home shortly after arrival.

Setting
An easy Tube ride direct from London Heathrow Airport to central London, the Westin London City sits no more than a block away from the closest Underground station, Mansion House. The hotel touts a prime central location, directly in the center of the original city limits of London. Situated at eye level on the Thames, its cobblestone roads draw you close to the choppy waters that hold so much history. This setting beckons tourists to join the bustling streets filled with commuters and blend in as a local. Eating breakfast over a busy skyway filled my imagination with ideas of how to spend the day. Along with St Paul’s Cathedral and the Tate Modern, hot spots like Borough Market, Millennium Bridge and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre are just minutes away.
Vibe
Since much of the borough was damaged in the Great Fire of London in 1666, the area is a delicious blend of old and new. After rebuilding, this part of London became home to much of the financial industry, and the Westin’s modern, clean lines contrast against the surviving historic architecture beautifully. The wild nature of the river is brought indoors through artwork and sculpture that mirror the natural elements of the setting, balanced with the modern amenities inside.
The Rooms
Boasting a spectacular 222 guest rooms, the Westin touts nine different room options along with a unique offering: the newly launched residences with a separate, private entrance perfect for families, friends and business travelers looking for an extended stay in London. Each residence includes three bedrooms, a full kitchen and a balcony with sweeping views. It’s easy to assume room sizes are smaller across the pond (because they definitely can be — space is limited!), but the Westin doesn’t compromise on space, and not once did we feel that was lacking. The quiet ambiance of the hotel is much needed after a long day sauntering about amongst the young professionals and other tourists.
Spa
For two years, the Westin’s Heavenly Spa was a Good Spa Guide’s finalist for Best Spa in London. Stepping off the elevator into the calming retreat, I instantly understood why. Heavenly Spa’s mission is clear: They believe the value of the spa experience comes from providing a space for personal reflection, separation from technology and silence. For me, after the lengthy 10-hour flight from Seattle, my body needed a moment to rest before the activities of our trip ramped up. I indulged in the Asian Journey exfoliation massage to relax my muscles and help my body adapt to the time zone. I later learned that this soothing ritual is inspired by Shiatsu, and works along the body’s energy meridians to restore balance and inner calm. In a perfect world, I would’ve spent all 10 days of our trip in the spa.
Dining
A stop at the Westin London City’s riverside bar and kitchen, Hithe + Seek, is a nonnegotiable. For history buffs, this exact location on Queenhithe Dock is where Alfred the Great arrived in 886 to rebuild the city, which had been abandoned by the Romans years before. This atypical venue honors its historical significance well by providing a space to connect and socialize while sharing a high-quality culinary experience. For a more approachable option, Mosaic sits above a bustling London street, making it perfect for people watching as you enjoy a traditional English breakfast and coffee. From dawn until dusk, Mosaic is a go-to for eating well, enjoying afternoon tea or celebrating at the Champagne bar once the sun goes down.
