Modern Mediterranean

Regional Winner & Finalist

Interior Designer: Brooke Voss and Katie Gustafson, Brooke Voss Design
Architect: James McNeal, James McNeal Architecture & Design
Builder: Brody Schmid, Nor-Son Custom Builders
Custom Cabinetry: Brian Grabski, Designed & Made

Design Goals

This modern home is a legacy project made for generations. The family, originally from Abu Dhabi, dreamed of a Mediterranean estate. No elaborate millwork and detailing here; but rather, a contemporary and sophisticated palette of materials and finishes. This home follows tradition with three generations residing under one roof. Of paramount importance was space for everyone, from Grandma to the youngest child, to gather, create and enjoy customary cuisine.

The homeowners’ business is food, so food preservation is very important to a client. Eliminating transfer of flavors from olives and garlic to gourmet imported dates is a feat only Sub-Zero could conquer. Food and heirloom family recipes are the heart of so many traditions for this large family. Precision cooking and baking are critical for a family that enjoys crafting elaborate meals together every single day.
