Since 1920, Stonewood has been a leader in handcrafted custom homes, using time-tested processes and implementing state-of-the-art technologies. The custom builder proudly defines and refines its design process on an ongoing basis in order to provide clients the best service possible. In an effort to give back, Stonewood has created the 141 Project, a nonprofit under the Cherry Avenue Foundation that funds the construction of housing for the poor and oppressed in impoverished countries. Here, Stonewood President and Owner J. Sven Gustafson tells us what inspired the 141 Project, how the community can get involved and more.

In what ways have you seen the building industry evolve throughout the pandemic?

Timelines are being accelerated. Where a lake home might have been the 10-year plan, it’s become today’s goal. Entire home remodels and additions have also been prioritized. Having been restricted from travel and other activities, our clients are much more focused on their homes, and specialty spaces have become more important. More thought is going into shaping home offices, bars, pools, sport courts and entertainment areas.

How would you describe the heart of Stonewood’s design process?

We are a passionate team with the best project managers in the business, and we work with some of the most talented artisans and craftsmen. We were brought together through a foundation of communication and process. We’re technology-focused so that we can efficiently document and communicate the intricate details to our large teams of suppliers and avoid any delays or errors throughout the entirety of a custom build.

What inspired you to launch the 141 Project?

For more than a decade, Stonewood has donated a home in Guatemala for every house built in Minnesota. In 2019, we formally launched the 141 Project with the hopes of inviting others to join. Immediately, a few close friends in the industry joined the core group of builders to pursue the dream. Fundamentally, Stonewood founded the 141 Project after considering what to gift clients upon the completion of their new home. Our donation of a home through the 141 Project to a family in need extends our clients’ blessing. For every home we build, we donate a home.

How can the community support the 141 Project?

We’re encouraging other builders around the country to join the effort and have several local and national builders involved. We host a yearly event and are looking forward to resuming construction trips to Guatemala and elsewhere as travel restrictions are lifted. Information can be found and donations made through the 141 Project’s website.
