Minnesotans eagerly greet spring each year as a welcome shift from chilly temperatures and gray surroundings. As trees bud and plant life reemerges, the thaw can uncover one of the more daunting home projects: landscaping. The complexities and labor-intensive work can make it easy for this task to fall to the bottom of our to-do lists, and no one understands this better than Nick and Lindsey Marsden, the husband-and-wife duo behind River Heights Outdoor Solutions. What started in a small South Minneapolis garage in 2007, they’ve grown into a full-blown design and build operation, creating modern landscapes for luxurious outdoor living for homeowners across the Twin Cities region. From hardscape planning to seasonal maintenance, the company’s expert team provides support for every aspect of landscaping. Here, River Heights designers share their favorite trends and spring landscaping tips to get inspired for the warmer season ahead.
How do you approach new landscape design projects?
We see landscape as an extension of the home’s architecture. Every project begins with collaboration between the homeowner, architect and builder to ensure the outdoor spaces feel connected and intentional.
We study scale, sightlines, grading and material transitions so that the landscape design complements the structure, rather than competing with it. Inside our team, designers and experienced project managers work closely together to balance creativity with construction expertise, delivering spaces that are both beautiful and well-built.
How does sustainability show up in River Heights’ approach?
For us, sustainability means building for longevity. We select regionally appropriate materials and plants that can handle Minnesota’s climate and perform well over time. Our focus is on quality craftsmanship and durable construction, ensuring each project matures gracefully and provides lasting value.
What are your favorite trends in landscaping right now?
We appreciate the continued shift toward seamless indoor/outdoor living. Homeowners want outdoor spaces that feel as comfortable and refined as their interiors.
Thoughtfully designed kitchens, dining terraces and gathering areas extend the livable space of the home and encourage more time outside during the warmer months.
How do you select which plants to use or combine on a given project?
Planting design begins with structure. We look at the home’s architecture and consider the client’s preferred style, whether formal or more natural. We then layer from large to small: Trees establish scale, shrubs provide mass and organization, and perennials add seasonal color and texture. We carefully consider mature size, bloom time and year-round interest to ensure the landscape feels balanced in every season.
What are your top tips for homeowners planning to landscape this spring?
Wait until the soil has properly dried before beginning cleanup to avoid compaction. Then remove winter debris from beds, and rake remaining leaves from the lawn. Taking your time in early spring sets the stage for a healthier landscape all season.
Any favorite plants, trees or shrubs you love to use? Any you avoid?
We don’t rely on favorites, but the multi-stem Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry is a strong choice for smaller spaces. It offers spring blooms, fall color and winter structure, while supporting local wildlife. And while magnolias are beautiful, they can struggle in Minnesota due to insect pressure. We prioritize plant selections that will thrive long-term and provide lasting performance.
