Here at Artful Living, we’re Gray Malin super fans. We first fell in love with the American photographer’s iconic work when it graced the cover of our Winter 2015 issue, and we’re thrilled to showcase another stunning image on our Summer 2018 issue (now on newsstands!). We asked Malin about his inspiration, his favorite travel destinations and how he makes every day a getaway.
What inspires your work?
I find inspiration in anything and everything. Some of my ideas require extensive research and time to execute, while others come together quickly in a flash of creativity. For example, from above, I love finding repetition and interesting patterns — skiers on the slopes, people in the park or sunbathers basking on the beach. Then from below, with a more conceptual collection like Gray Malin at the Parker, I love the juxtaposition of something unexpected in a beautiful setting. I mean, one wouldn’t typically expect a couple penguins to be hanging out at the pool of a luxury resort, right? It’s this kind of unexpected moment that inspires me.
What’s one of your most memorable photo shoots?
My most recent Private Collection series, Art of Living, was a tremendous undertaking. Shot in Bora Bora, one of the most beautiful places in the world, the concept was to create a juxtaposition of organic beauty and manmade designs. To accomplish this, we worked with local engineers to build a 15-by-15-foot mirrored platform as well as freight shipped all of the midcentury modern furniture utilized in the series. It was a lot of work, but the results were well worth it!
What travel destinations are you loving right now?
I traveled to Cambodia and Thailand at the beginning of the year for a three-week vacation, and I was in awe the entire time. We were able to really engross ourselves in the culture, from visiting historic landmarks to eating traditional fare to enjoying the nightlife. It was one of the best trips I’ve been on in a long time. Next, I’m heading back to my beloved Italy over the summer. Simply put, I cannot get enough of this glamorous country. And last but not least, I will always adore South Africa. It should be on everyone’s bucket list. The stunning beaches, incredible adventure safaris and lovely wine country all make for the perfect getaway.
You recently revealed your party-ready rooftop deck. What are your tips for easy summer entertaining?
I’m a big proponent of keeping things simple yet chic. A signature cocktail goes a long way as far as adding a personal touch when hosting people in your home. Also, if you’re having a good-sized group over, I suggest hiring someone to serve drinks. When people aren’t hovering around the bar, they are spending more time socializing and enjoying the space they’re in.
How do you embody your tag line, Make Every Day a Getaway?
There is definitely one common denominator in my personal and professional life, which is that I am constantly seeking adventure and experiencing the world around me. By “making every day a getaway,” my goal is to ignite conversation and spark imagination both in myself and those who experience my work.
What can fans expect next?
I just completed my largest shoot to date on the grounds of the Beverly Hills Hotel inspired by my interpretation of Hollywood’s golden era. I am excited to share it with everyone later this year.
