A rallying call in 2011 from former University of Minnesota Gophers women’s basketball coach Pam Borton planted the seed for TeamWomen, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering women and girls to lead and succeed. Led by Executive Director Katy Burke and with a board that includes Bridgewater Bank’s longtime leader and current board member Mary Jayne Crocker, the organization develops female leaders from the classroom to the boardroom.
“Our goal is to support the full arc of women in leadership, and that starts early,” says Burke. “We help girls find their voice and women discover what’s possible through valuable connections and opportunities to grow throughout their lives.”
From leadership events and mentorship for professional women to Empower Leadership Academy for young girls, the organization offers opportunities for those at every age and stage in life. And it’s working. TeamWomen boasts a community of more than 700 members, many of whom give back as mentors, volunteers, donors and sponsors. Tens of thousands have participated in its programs, resulting in more confidence, strengthened leadership skills and expansive networks.
“What I love most about TeamWomen is the challenge to grow something I am deeply passionate about,” says Burke. “I get energized and inspired when I see women connect with the right people, gain confidence and realize they’re capable of more than they ever imagined. The best part is seeing them turn around and invest in someone else’s journey. Watching those moments of growth and possibility never gets old.”
The organization leans on trusted local collaborators to ensure it can reach and support as many women as possible. “Bridgewater Bank has been an incredible, mission-aligned partner,” says Burke. “They share our values and always ask how they can help. Because of that, we’ve continued to grow and thrive.”
