A universally beloved designer and a bona fide Artful Living fave, Nate Berkus is no stranger to any aspect of the modern world of design. The native Minnesotan’s storied time in the industry has crafted a distinct portfolio that’s rooted in connection, simplicity and a commitment to championing great interior style. Continuing to grow his empire, Berkus has officially unveiled his collaboration with Rugs USA, an insanely chic collection of statement pieces that are built to last a lifetime. We tapped Berkus to share a closer look at his inspiration for these fresh designs and detail what’s on the horizon for him for the remainder of 2025.
What was your creative process shaping this collection together with Rugs USA?
My design references are always informed by history, and that was the starting point for this collection. I spent time looking through antique textiles, vintage rugs, Chinese art deco patterns and design from the 1930s and 40s — styles that have stood the test of time. From there, the team at Rugs USA and I worked closely to translate those inspirations into something that feels thoughtful, livable and modern. Each rug was designed to layer effortlessly into any space and to feel like it’s always been there, even if you just unrolled it.
Where did you draw inspiration from for these exciting designs?
I’ve always been drawn to things that feel collected, not decorated. This collection pulls inspiration from so many places — heritage textiles, vintage motifs, even things like the texture of worn leather or aged stone. I like my interiors to feel lived-in and thoughtful, and the rugs reflect that with warm neutrals, subtle patterns and materials that bring a quiet sophistication without trying too hard. And the fact that they’re washable makes them even more livable. Beautiful, yes, but also designed for real life.
What’s the simplest design advice you can offer someone looking to add a large rug to a room?
Start with what feels good. A rug should ground the room and bring a sense of calm and cohesion. My advice is always go neutral, go textured and go bigger than you think. A rug that’s too small can make a room feel disconnected, while one that extends under your key furniture pieces makes everything feel more intentional. This collection was created with that in mind, and each piece is versatile and designed to elevate without overpowering.
Can you share the trends or styles you’re most excited about this fall/winter season?
I’m seeing a real return to warmth in the way of earth tones, layered textures and pieces that feel personal and storied. People are leaning into a design style that doesn’t just look beautiful, but feels meaningful. It’s less about perfection and more about creating rooms that reflect our daily lives.
What hobbies or self-care practices are currently keeping you grounded?
Time at home. Whether it’s making breakfast with my kids or rearranging a bookshelf with my husband, it’s these everyday moments that feel most special to me. I’ve also gotten better at carving out time to unplug, read and just take a breath. And I’ve learned that saying no can be just as powerful as saying yes — especially when it comes to protecting your time and energy.
Do you have any resolutions for the rest of 2025?
To keep creating with purpose. Whether it’s through product design, interiors or storytelling, I want the work to feel intentional and to make people feel something. This has already been a big year for me and the months ahead are just as exciting — launching my book Foundations, new residential projects, additional partnerships and the 30th anniversary of my design firm. My goal is to stay present and enjoy the journey.
