Life at this plantation-style luxury resort seems to move at the pace of sweet molasses. The just-opened Montage Palmetto Bluff offers superb accommodations in an oasis-like setting. The property sits within the 20,000-acre Palmetto Bluff community, a centuries-old maritime forest surrounded by 32 miles of riverfront in South Carolina’s low country.

A signature experience upon arrival is the canine ambassador program. Visitors are welcomed by purebred Labrador retriever pups. The pooches — Cooper, May and New — are named after the rivers set amidst the forest.

The property was inspired by an elegant 72-room mansion built by Richard Thornton Wilson Jr. in the early 1900s. A devastating fire destroyed the manor in 1926; ruins are still visible, and some of the original features have been incorporated into the present-day design. The resort offers a total of 200 guest accommodations, including a charming collection of rooms, suites and cottages as well as 35 private Montage Residences.

Dining options abound. Named for the state flower, main restaurant Jessamine is known for its creative Southern cuisine. The Canoe Club draws its inspiration from the nearby May River, serving up local seafood. Situated alongside the lagoon, Fore & Aft focuses on casual fare. Buffalo’s, with its infamous biscuit bar, is a fan favorite. Guests can buy gourmet foods, fine wines and unique gifts at the on-property general store, RT’s Market.

The good life also happens to be the sporting life at Palmetto Bluff. Visitors can enjoy nature walks along the preserve trails, horseback riding at the state-of-the-art Longfield Stables and skeet shooting at the Shooting Club.

A wealth of other amenities includes the Jack Nicklaus–designed May River Golf Club, the Palmetto Bluff Conservancy and Wilson Landing Marina. Spa Montage boasts outdoor relaxation areas with hot tubs, plunge pools, eucalyptus steam rooms and redwood saunas. And there’s even a yacht for river excursions. Grace is a 103-year-old vessel that has been masterfully restored and is perfect for sunset cruises along the coastal waterway. Redefining Southern hospitality, Montage Palmetto Bluff radiates magnetic charm at a peaceful pace.
