Starting on February 4, the dog days of winter are back with the return of the Lake Minnetonka Klondike Dog Derby. This beloved family-friendly event is a world-class 40-mile race that brings the incredible sport of mushing to the heart of historic Excelsior on Water Street. Guests are welcome to view the veterinarian checks on February 4 and meet the competing mushers and their dogs.

Opening ceremonies for the eight-dog race will kick off on February 5 at 9:30 a.m., with the race beginning at 10 a.m. The route charges down snow-packed Water Street and onto Lake Minnetonka before finishing back in Excelsior that afternoon.

The classic film Balto will be shown on both days, and visitors should plan to explore the new Klondike Village, which will feature food trucks, a beverage garden, bonfire pits, a s’mores station, games and official Klondike Dog Derby merchandise. Those unable to make the race in-person can watch from home with live drone footage above the lake at klondikelive.com.
