Even though winter in the North is notoriously long, it’s no match for the adventurous and rooted spirit of Minnesotans. Starting on Friday, February 3, venture outdoors to experience a piece of beloved history at the third annual Lake Minnetonka Klondike Dog Derby in Excelsior. This family-friendly event is an energetic tribute to the history of sled dog racing in Minnesota and a unique celebration of sport, spirit and passion.
On Friday, explore unique attractions like Meet the Mushers, Hug a Husky, veterinarian checks, sled dog rides and ice carving demonstrations. The fun will be fueled by food trucks, hot chocolate and a s’mores station. On Saturday, observe musher preparations before the opening ceremony kicks off at 9:30 a.m. Cheer on musher teams as they embark on the 40-mile journey around Lake Minnetonka, racing to cross the finish line on Excelsior’s historic Water Street.
Enjoy the event’s free shuttle service throughout the day and relax at Klondike Village, which features race viewing, food and drinks, bonfires, games, and official merchandise. After the action, be sure to check out the awards ceremony and the wrap party at Excelsior Brewing Co.
