What inspires your work?
Inspiration comes from many places. My team and I are always inspired by our clients, as they’re fascinating individuals with a finely honed sense of style and a strong sense of how they want to live.
I also find inspiration in my own travels. I adore the understated simplicity of Korea, the drama of Egypt, and the beauty and serenity of the English countryside. I also have a lifelong passion for historic homes, so my mental archives are filled with images of Glensheen in Duluth, Vizcaya in Florida, the Biltmore Estate in North Carolina — I could go on and on.
How does IMS help your designs come to life?
Like a historic home filled with beautifully appointed rooms inhabited by interesting people, IMS is a constant source of design inspiration. My team and I are always stopping by Design Professionals, Inc., Fantasia Showrooms and KDR Designer Showroom to converse with colleagues and gather yet another armful of gorgeous memo samples, passementerie and images of furniture to bring our visions to life.
What pieces, styles or trends are you loving right now?
As my colleagues at IMS will attest, I’ve never been a trendsetter or follower. But I do appreciate that classicism and bohemian style are being celebrated in design magazines and coffee-table books. I love the way these timeless styles are being updated and reinterpreted to bring color, comfort and warmth to modern living environments.
What is your design mantra?
Whether we’re designing a new industrial penthouse condo on the waterfront in Boston or an authentic French chateau on the Great Plains, my design mantra is respect. To quote the late, great Aretha Franklin, my team and I have the utmost R-E-S-P-E-C-T for our clients, the history of the land and the home, and the unique opportunities and demands of today’s lifestyle.
Why is IMS important in the Twin Cities design community?
IMS is the heart and soul of our local design community. The historic building with its amazing double-helix staircase recalls Minneapolis’s storied history as a center for design and craftsmanship. IMS is also important because it is the home of hundreds of top designers, architects, builders, artisans and manufacturers, making it easy for clients to learn, browse and shop for great design and beautiful products from around the world.
