In 1896, William L. Harris, owner of the New England Furniture and Carpet Company, decided the best way to celebrate the company’s 10th anniversary was to build and raffle off a modern, eight-room home to a loyal customer. To enter the contest, all customers had to do was spend $25 at the store. The Kenwood Park–adjacent property cost $4,236 when it was built and the promotion generated significant buzz, attracting thousands of entries and nearly $500,000 in sales. The property is serenely positioned on a lot adjacent to Kenwood Park and just mere steps from Lake of the Isles.
On January 1, 1897, Mr. and Mrs. Meagley were publicly selected as winners of the home, which they owned until 1916. True to Harris’ promise that the “exquisite home outfit will stand for years” as evidence of his company’s commitment to true quality, the house remains standing 130 years later. Even The Mary Tyler Moore Show‘s casting group couldn’t help but notice this gem — it was the very first house they fell in love with on the way to Lake of the Isles.
