Investing your money is a practice that should be driven by thoughtful impact and social responsibility. That’s how Jina Penn-Tracy of Centered Wealth makes her financial decisions because she feels that how you spend and invest your money should reflect your core values. Centered Wealth lives by the approach of building wealth that actively reflects the values and well-being of the heart and mind with the spirit of community.

Before becoming a Financial Advisor in 2004 then cofounding Centered Wealth in 2017, Penn-Tracy wrote extensively for local media on topics of consumer action, environmental contamination and the impact that personal choices make on the planet. She began to discover that much like consumer advocacy, the investment choices we make strongly impact overall corporate decision making. During that time, she realized she was having a hard time finding a Financial Advisor who shared that same resilience when it came to financial planning and decided to become the Financial Advisor she would like to see in the world.

At Centered Wealth, Penn-Tracy practices using ESG investing. Environmental, Social and Governance investing refers to the three central factors in measuring the sustainability and societal impact of an investment in a company or business. These criteria help to better determine the future financial performance of companies — a system that’s equally focused on making a positive impact in the world and providing a good investment return.

The gender gap that presents itself in the world of finance has been seen as both a challenge and a major opportunity for women. Statistically, women are better at investing than men,* and through her work, Penn-Tracy has noticed women taking more control of their personal finances and their attitudes tending to be more optimistic when it comes to activist investing. She even created an opportunity to work with her daughter, Anya Gage.

Gage was enrolled in the geography program at the University of Minnesota. Her studies there covered the wealth disparities across the globe and left her feeling powerless in the face of the negative ways capitalism can impact the world. But with her mother’s approach to wealth management, Gage was able to understand the flow of money through a more holistic perspective of spending, investing and giving your money with purpose. She is now an Investment Advisor Representative in the vein of Centered Wealth’s model of values-based wealth management.

Next time you’re going to invest your money, remember that where that money goes has an impact. Practicing values-based financial decision making benefits not only you, but the world around you. It’s cool to care.
