Carley Rudd is a Los Angeles–based travel photographer who’s developed a unique eye and a passionate affinity for Mother Earth. She has traveled the world capturing top luxury destinations and experiences, and aspires to continue adventuring wherever the wind takes her. Here, we chat with the photographer about how she fell in love with the art form, what inspires her most and more.
When did you get into photography?
I’ve always had a passion for photography and an insatiable curiosity to see the world. I remember as a young girl flipping through National Geographic reading about Jane Goodall and other explorers, telling myself I would someday visit the places they did and capture it through my lens. In my 20s, I found myself saving all my money to go on trips. I built up a portfolio through self-funded travel and started sharing my work with the world. It wasn’t until around 2015 that photography became my full-time career. I’ve never looked back!
How would you describe your photography style?
I have a predilection for minimalist compositions. Soft natural hues and tranquil scenes permeate my work. My photography evokes a feeling of blissful escapism. Each image invites you on a journey both within and without, inspiring a sense of peace, harmony and appreciation for our world.
What inspires your work?
I find endless inspiration through nature and the lessons Mother Earth can teach us if we open ourselves up to listening. Traveling to new places and having new experiences fuels my creativity. I also find that when I slow down and truly observe the present moment, I’m able to allow my inner voice to inspire and guide my work.
Do you have a favorite subject to photograph?
I love to photograph off-the-beaten-path destinations, boutique hotels, design and architecture, artisan brands, and bespoke experiences that celebrate conscious living. I’m also drawn to creating fine art images that capture and honor the beauty of our world.
Do you have a favorite project to date?
So many! I’ve been so fortunate and blessed to have such wonderful clients and opportunities. I would have to say that working with Aman to shoot a few of its properties has been an unbelievable joy. But my most memorable project was traveling to Mallorca to photograph a five-day artisanal and culinary retreat with Espanolita founder Carmen Ruiz de Huidobro.
Any exciting projects on the horizon?
I’m working on publishing my first fine art photography book. You can also expect a lot more creative risks and a new series of limited-edition prints rooted in mindfulness that invite you to look within.
