Midtown Manhattan has a reputation for being many things: polished, buttoned-up and fast-paced. Amidst business towers and major metropolitan landmarks, The Whitby Hotel stands as a playful island among the bustle. From the outside, its façade is rather unassuming; step through the doors, however, and a whimsical universe unfolds. Bold patterns, sprightly artwork and little curiosities invite you at every turn. The Whitby is the second of three hotels opened in the Big Apple by Firmdale Hotels, the brand founded by Tim and Kit Kemp. With three Michelin Keys to its name, the hotel pairs its frolicsome spirit with impeccable hospitality. After a day spent wandering quintessential New York City, where better to retreat than somewhere that feels wonderfully removed from it all?

Setting

The Whitby occupies a coveted corner of Midtown, sitting on West 56th Street just off Fifth Avenue. Step outside and you’re in the thick of the city’s signature glamour with designer boutiques, Central Park and many of the city’s cultural institutions all within a few blocks. Spend a day shopping at the best stores knowing that The Whitby is just a short walk away when your feet (and credit card) need a break.

Vibe

Designed to inspire and delight, the hotel’s aesthetic is simply whimsical. The tone is set at check-in, when you’re handed a traditional metal key worthy of a Wes Anderson movie. Unique moments and vibrant colors are tucked into every corner, including an enormous bear statue on the event floor. Even expectedly mundane elements, like the elevators, tout pops of art and personality. And don’t miss the live music on Saturdays, when the city’s music scene finds its way into The Whitby’s color-drenched bar.

Amenities

Every space at The Whitby is quirkier than the last. On the lower levels, there’s a private cinema donned with electric orange seating and plush blue walls. It’s played host to numerous Hollywood screenings and sightings of stars like Angelina Jolie, Kate Winslet, Kim Kardashian and more. The event spaces are equally enticing, whether for grand soirées or a chic photoshoot backdrop for Instagram (how I used them). Alongside the lobby bar and restaurant on the main floor, the Drawing Room offers a cozy nook for lounging and access to the Honesty Bar. And, of course, the hotel is equipped with a full gym, valet service and 24-hour room service.

Rooms

Similar to The Whitby’s sister hotel, The Crosby, all 86 rooms are completely different by design. Most notably, the beds feature a larger-than-life upholstered headboard, each custom designed and often featuring playful patterns of mythical creatures, oversized florals or British folklore. Every room also touts floor-to-ceiling windows, RikRak toiletries, Firmdale Sleep linens and a mannequin dress form to match. From terrace suites to cozy abodes, you’ll find your storybook bedroom here.

Dining

Dining at The Whitby is as much a feast for the eyes as it is the stomach. While the pewter bar is a must-see, the Orangery dining room is the real showstopper. Its bird-speckled chandeliers steal the scene, complemented by 40 hand-etched porcelain vessels by artist Martha Freud inset along one wall. With European-influenced fare led by Chef Anthony Paris, the offerings encompass decadent breakfast, brunch and dinner menus. Highlights include the orecchiette with fava beans and Gold Bar squash, New York striploin with peppercorn sauce and fries, and, to finish off with dessert, pistachio tiramisu with cherry compote. Don’t miss the beloved afternoon tea service inspired by Kit Kemp’s book, Design Stories.
