After a seamless location change due to weather, guests gathered inside Minneapolis’s Sidecar Studios to be whisked away on a delectable journey exploring Lao and French cuisine through a blend of art and storytelling. Marking the inaugural event of Jolie Clemens and Alison Hoekstra’s Minneapolis-based creative studio Taste Poetic, Ma Der Ma Der was truly a one-of-a-kind dining experience led by acclaimed local chefs Ann Ahmed and Brooke Faudree.and sponsored by Tock. The bright, airy warehouse space channeled an inviting tropical atmosphere thanks to lush greenery courtesy of Tonkadale, artistic projections dancing across the expansive walls and creative touches throughout the space.
The evening began with vibrant signature welcome sips and mingling as delicious bites rotated through the crowd. The hypnotic sounds of a phin — a Laotian pear-shaped lute — playing in the background set the tone for the evening. Attendees came together around a palatial table for the main event, which created a connected family-style experience. Ahmed and Faudree led guests through the curated multi-course tasting menu, alternating dishes that celebrated ingredients and techniques from Lao and French cooking traditions in artful epicurean conversation. Mouth-watering plates like red snapper crudo and spiced duck confit showcased the talents of each chef, beautifully highlighting a range of flavors. Each course was set off by a unique wine pairing curated by local sommelier Nicolas Giraud of The Tasting Room. By the time guests were savoring the last bites of the delectable desserts, the warmth of community and epicurean magic was tangible throughout the space.
