What is the philosophy behind Spoke & Weal?
Our haircutting philosophy is simple: Dry hair tells no lies. Cutting strands clean, dry and smooth enables us to be crystal clear on density, length and texture during the technical process. This practice ensures there are no surprises at the end of each appointment. Our color services are completely customized by our team using the Aveda color line, which helps us maintain genuine individuality and refinement. Under Christine’s guidance, we rely on in-depth consultations to create dimension, movement and tone that tells a story and brings out the best in guests’ overall looks.

Spoke & Weal has developed a strong presence across the country. What inspired you to open a salon in Minneapolis?
Our business was founded by Minneapolis hairdressers! Jon started his hair career in the Twin Cities, as did San Francisco–based stylist Christy “Dylo” Hannibal and Minneapolis’s current creative director, Kelsy Osterman. Since its launch, Spoke & Weal has had Minneapolis on its radar. We really love the community.
What sets Spoke & Weal apart from other salons?
Spoke & Weal is known for dry cutting and custom dimensional hair coloring. Our technical standards set us apart from the typical salon. K18 products are included as part of all of our services because the brand is truly groundbreaking in the world of hair health.
We also proudly consider ourselves culture drivers. As employers, we offer 401(k) matching, gym memberships, health care, longevity and support to professionals, which is not the status quo in the industry.

Which hair trends and styles are having a well-deserved moment?
The butterfly cut and the Italian bob are two styles currently dominating the streets. We’ve noticed trends moving in a more refined direction, championing healthy, polished and voluminous locks.
The butterfly cut is versatile and can be customized to all hair types. It’s an easy nineties blowout look you can achieve using the Dyson Airwrap or your go-to round brush; or you can simply air-dry for a textured style created by the heavy-layered haircut. I believe a version of this trend is here to stay, though it will evolve from the heavier, shorter fringe into a cheekbone or jawline frame, enabling the same movement but in a softer way.
When it comes to color trends, we are stepping into subtle ombres. Think less money piece, less face-frame and more uniformity with golden and warm hues. Natural, progressive and warm hair colors are officially back, which are extremely flattering for all skin tones.

Do you have any favorite beauty products you can share?
K18’s Peptide Prep pH maintenance shampoo is one of our absolute favorites. It keeps strands healthy and clean while protecting the longevity of color treatments, as well as clarifying metals and minerals without compromising the color quality. K18’s Molecular Hair Repair oil is also really great. It combats frizz, reduces sun damage and protects locks.

What’s on the horizon for Spoke & Weal?
Aveda Congress 2023! The biggest party in hair is set to happen in Minneapolis again this fall, and Spoke & Weal will be presenting. We’re so excited for our team to participate — especially on the heels of opening our brand-new Austin, Texas, location, which has taken off full steam.
