Artful Living | Inside Lake Country Builders’ Modern Lake Minnetonka Cottage

Nestled into the lakeside landscape, this 3,588-square-foot modern cottage was thoughtfully crafted by Lake Country Builders and O’Hara Interiors to balance ease, elegance and long-term livability. The homeowner’s vision for this project was clear from the beginning: They wanted to create a main-level haven that prioritizes enduring comfort and embodies timeless style. Every detail was considered, from the siting of the home to preserve mature trees to the carefully layered finishes that bring warmth and character to each space.

From the start, this project was about trust and intentionality. After seeing one of Lake Country Builders’ previous remodels, the homeowners knew the team was up to the task of designing a new residence that would respect the Shorewood neighborhood’s character while making the most of its prominent corner lot. In less careful hands, a large multistory build could have easily overwhelmed the site. But working closely with Lake Country Builders Director of Design Ryan Smolik to follow the natural grade, the team was able to reduce the home’s elevation impact and maximize its connection to Lake Minnetonka.

Preserving the landscape was another important consideration for this project. Lake Country Builders partnered with an arborist to ensure the protection of mature trees, removing only those that were dying or disruptive. They then replanted prairie grasses and new trees, which not only maintains the character of the neighborhood, but supports pollinators, improves water quality, and reduces irrigation needs. Strategic grading and swales now manage runoff naturally before it reaches the lake.

Inside, the home was designed for light, flow and flexibility. Expansive windows and multi-panel doors bring in natural light from every direction, while intentional design choices like wide hallways, a curbless shower and an accessible main-level floor plan ensure comfort for years to come. One inconspicuous addition Smolik planned for was a future elevator location. With floor trusses already installed, this feature can be added off the front entry in the future with only minor modifications. It’s one of those thoughtful, behind-the-scenes details that reflects how carefully the team weighed considerations around longevity and ease of living.

Investing in areas that would provide lasting value, such as high-quality finishes in high-traffic spaces and thoughtful architectural details that reflect the homeowners lifestyle paid off. The result is a home that feels both timeless and personal — rooted in its site, connected to the community and built to evolve gracefully with its owners.
