Randy Heinrich and Liz Schultz of Heinrich + Schultz established their exquisite interior-design firm back in 2004. Each has more than 25 years’ experience, and they share a love for tailored, stylish looks that don’t sacrifice on comfort. This spring, the team took on the interior of a yacht based on the waters of Lake Minnetonka. We sat down with Heinrich + Schultz to learn more about their design process.

Can you tell us more about your client and their needs?

We have worked with these clients for more than 15 years. They are a lovely family and so down-to-earth. We wanted the boat to feel as warm and welcoming as they are.

How did designing for a yacht, rather than a home, change your process?

The design process starts the same. The main difference is that things have to be easy on a boat. When the boat moves, so does everything in it. So we kept it simple, adding fabulous pillows and throws that feel fresh, regal, welcoming and comfortable.

What was your inspiration for this project?

Our inspiration always comes from our clients. This project was first inspired by a pair of jeans with lemons on them that I happened to be wearing. They are fresh and happy, and remind you of summer. Our inspiration often comes from nature, fashion and food. It evolves from there.

In general, from where do you draw inspiration for projects?

It could start with the smallest of things, such as a piece of artwork, an antique or something our client treasures. And as I mentioned: nature, fashion and food.

What elements did you focus on in the space?

We translated our clients’ style to the interior of the yacht, keeping in mind comfort, elegance, easy care and maintenance. The boat is very regal, so we focused on that feeling of luxury while still keeping things accessible and comfortable.

Overall, what was your favorite part of this project?

Our favorite part of this project was making a house call on the water — or should we say a “yacht call.”
